Earth’s Red Offering

This shot was taken at Oniru Market in Lagos, Nigeria, a place I never thought I’d find myself. Oniru Market is one of the busiest and most tightly packed markets I’ve ever encountered. Manoeuvring through its narrow, chaotic aisles was a challenge in itself. Let’s just say, I’m not exactly great at squeezing through crowds, balancing precarious goods, and dodging swift-moving traders.

Trying to navigate while setting up this shot? That was a whole other story. At one point, I came dangerously close to knocking over a market lady’s beautifully stacked tomatoes. The look she gave me was enough to burn into memory! But amidst all the noise and commotion, there was something raw and beautiful about the moment.

The vibrant red tatashe peppers in the worn, black bowl stood out, almost as if they were waiting to tell their story. The hands holding them were steady, weathered by years of work, and they added so much depth to the composition. I honestly doubt I’ll be back to Oniru Market again, it’s not exactly my kind of adventure. But this image feels worth it. It’s a reminder of that bustling, spirited chaos, the vividness of life in Lagos.
